Skyping With a REAL, LIVE Author/Singer and How You Can Do It, too! (with a freebie for all of you, too!)

An amazing thing happened in Bangor, Maine last week:  As we were wrapping up the year, we got to fit one more event in and what a special one! Not to name drop or anything, but we had the I Teach K's Keynote speaker, Debbie Clement, visit us in our gym. No, we weren't able to fly her in (although it is still a hope of mine for the future!), but it was definitely the next best thing.  By hooking up a projector and some speakers, we were able to Skype with her.  If you don't know about Skyping, it is a way to communicate in real time like a phone conversation,  but you are also able to see each other.  So, we (about 120 kindergarten children and their teachers) got to interact, play, dance and sing with Debbie and she got to watch the childrens' joy as they were entranced and engaged the entire 45 minutes we we Skyped.
To prepare for our visit, we all made Tall Giraffe hats!  It is one of Debbie's most famous songs that she has put into book form.  Each child had their own giraffe hat (that we made listening to the song Tall Giraffe on repeat, of course!) and a special sticker (see below) that featured Debbie's infamous love for rainbow colors and a picture of her as well.  Scroll to the bottom of this post if you want to make Tall Giraffe hats with your students, too, because I am giving the pattern I created away FREE to MMMB fans.

Look at all the excitement of these children as they joined in with Debbie's fun!  Her excitement is contagious and the children instantly bonded with Debbie via a big screen and were amazed as I that she wasn't really there with us, but was all the way in Ohio!

Even her question and answer session was whole group interactive!  I don't want to give away the way she does it, but let's just say this women GETS children and knows how to keep them on their (tippy, tippy, tippy) TOES.  I was so pleased with the random kinders that got chosen to ask questions and what an experience for those children!  They got to come right up to the computer and talk to Debbie personally.  It was soooooooo super cool.  Technology never ceases to amaze me!

Next up?  A package from Debbie that contained 3 books specifically personalized to my monkeys that haven't been put down since they were opened.  The children LOVE her music, LOVE her books and LOVE Debbie Clement....Now, we are practicing (my personal favorite) You're Wonderful to perform at our End of Year Kindergarten Celebration.

And, although I had written her name on the board when we were making cards for her, I think that this little girl sounded it out best:  Depee! Depee!  Do you love it Debbie??  Well, she loves you, Depee!  We all love you and hope that you will be an annual visitor (whether in person or via skype) because "you ar the Best, Depee." I highly recommend this type of event for any school...it is EASY, INEXPENSIVE and UNFORGETTABLE! xoxo

  1. What a cool experience for your kids! I really want to get my classroom more tech-y, using these types of tools. Maybe since I got the first year done, I can more to more of these ideas. Thanks for the inspiration.

  2. What a great idea? Does Debbie charge a skyping fee? I'd love to try this next year with my kinders (this will be my first year teaching kindergarten....scary, yet exciting)!

  3. I too would like more information on ways to set this type of thing up. I am not one that has used a lot of technology because most of my school just uses it as an easy center to plan, time filler, or electronic worksheets. I am interested, but want meaningful ways to use it.
