Spelling Words With Pokey Pins

This is one way my students practice their popcorn words (a.k.a. sight words that "pop" up all of the time).  I call it Pokey Pins and all you need is a soft surface (rug, foam) and push pins and your students can go from this:
to this:
As an added bonus, it is an excellent activity for the kiddos little hand muscles and always a classroom favored activity.  Try it this year with your students!

You can find my Pokey Pin sets here:

  1. Super cute idea! I'm going to try it as a center this year with my first grader's spelling words!

  2. I think this is great.I cant wait to share this with the teachers at my school. I know they will love it!!

  3. Thanks for the idea!

  4. Fabulous idea! I'm excited to add this to my word work activities. Thanks for sharing.

  5. I used to do this with the bigger sized puchpins and I would cut up carpet squares into 4X6 pieces to match the letter we were push pinning. (I used it for letter recognition; I guess the sizes of carpet would be bigger for words!) :) Amy

  6. Won't my kids love this! Thanks for sharing!
