How Do You Get Your Students Acquainted With Your Room? Free Printable

No matter how many years I've been teaching, I still get the butterflies before I start.  Who will my children be?  What will my challenges of the year be?  Will the parents be supportive?  I'm an adult and I can sift through all these things and know that it will all end up alright, even if it feels unsettled to start.  But, let's take a minute to think about our "babies" (some of whom are entering a classroom for the very first time in their life) and all the anxieties they could have and not even be able to articulate yet.
When I start my year, I put all of my worries aside when my new friends enter the room for the first time and do all that I can to make them feel safe and in their new "home".  One of the things I do is give them a scavenger hunt and set them free to work together and find some important items in the room.  This is so much more effective than me giving these already overwhelmed children  a structured tour.  It is also a great conversation sparker when they take it home to their families.
